unlawful deaths, young and older

This week in an urban residential areas, two grade school children, a parent and grandparent were shot.  Only one I believe, is still alive.  A young man dies from a shooting in a crowded mall.  Many blame the police for being gun happy and prejudice.  That sadly may, in a few cases be so.  I keep hoping not.  Not just police do the shooting.  Knowing that is important.  I wonder though, if policemen, experienced and new on the job, have been forced into sad situations, not of their doing.  Every time they don their uniforms and badges, the day becomes scary.  They didn't choose this career so they could freely shoot people.  That was not their oath.  Sometimes it appears, there is an angry crowd there ahead of them, ready to yell, taunt and threaten them.  The officers get it from both sides, the perpetrators and purposely intimidating bystanders.  That's not what they signed up for.  It seems however, the last two or three generations of younger people seem to automatically take the adversarial position.  Whose fault might that be?  You can't blame everything on the police.  They show up because they've been called and they are then turned into the 'bad guys'.  Excusing the situation because 'things got out of hand' is in itself inexcusable.  Hating authority just because, is also in excusable.  Maybe its too late for these younger people.  Concentrating on the upcoming youngsters may be our only hope.  I know, out there, many are trying to do just that.   Don't give up.  Please.............................marge

Bald is beautiful

For men, or so I thought but then I took a closer look.  They didn't 'bald' their heads, they just moved the hair down to their faces.  Just a simple trade off.  That seems to be a turn on for many women, or at least the professionals have tried to convince us so.  Really?  Dancing cheek to cheek with an old, half worn out scrub brush?  I don't think so.  Why can't we women have the same privilege? (not the facial hair of course). It would make life in the morning so much easier.  I know, women have gone bald, but not in an attempt to beautify themselves.  Good  'old' chemo did it for them.  Back when I did it, the thought of staying bald never occurred to me.  I would think twice about it now, ( without the chemo of course), in fact, if it came into fashion, I'd be the first in line!....................marge

Ms Universe Pageant

I tuned in late to the pageant, thank heavens.  I thought all the women had an arm or shoulder problem.  Hands on hips whether standing or walking.  all except one, Ms Philippines.  When it came to the last three, I chose her, being grossly disappointed but only for a couple minutes.  She is a winner, justly so.  Next time officials, hand the MC one card at a time so no horrible mix up like last night can occur again.  I  don't blame Steve Harvey.  Had to be a most nerve racking gig.  He was the gentleman....................marge

Michigan lead poisoning ignored?

State officials, legislators, The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and perhaps most importantly, our Governor didn't think this a serious enough problem to listen to a Dr's urgent concern?  Her findings were all but pushed aside and now, children of Flint and nearby will be paying the consequences.  They all were warned but chose not to take the problem seriously.  What kind of officials do we have running our state?  They are unbelievable.  It's too bad they can't be prosecuted for ignoring to uphold their sworn duty to the State of Michigan.  They will have to live with their neglect of duty.  The children will have to live with worse and for the rest of their lives.....................marge

Satisfied?

Why is boredom so depressing?  Maybe because we do it to ourselves?  I have a warm home,  food in the fridge, money in my pocket and more than one TV.  I also have dozens of wonderful books to read and fun projects I just can't get around to starting or finishing.  To be in such a mental trap.  Brought on by myself?  Pills are temporary and friends can't always be around.   'Some day',  my favorite motto,  I will overcome this.  Life is too  important to miss.................................marge

Dog walkers, misnomer.

Everyday I see people and dogs go by.  Normally its called 'taking the dog for a walk'.  I'm sorry but that appears to be quite incorrect.  It, percentage wise from my viewpoint, should be 'taking the human for a run'.  This tends to exclude extremely large dogs like the lovable 'Newfie', thank heavens.  They know the damage they could cause their owners if by chance they were fascinated by squirrels.  Little dogs, on the other hand, show little regard for the person they are walking (on a leash of course).  Their small stature and weight are life saving to the human at the back end of the leash.  One or the other needs more training.  I hope the 'adults' figure it out soon......................marge

Michigan State. Have they not learned anything?

Can't those in charge of the college do anything to correct the continued, destructive behavior of some, not all of their students?  I know parents can't control  these kids when they leave home and go wild after any victories but try, please.  Michigan State has been  continually put to great shame by their students uncontrolled bad behavior.  Maybe making them pay their own way might help.  Let them know these four years aren't free.  Great sacrifices by the parents have been made. Don't let it all be for nothing.  And, I'm quite sure  the police departments have much better things to do than baby sit (with danger) these extremely immature 'students'.............................marge

New auto designers. Listen up.

The world is getting more Senior drivers everyday.  You keep designing for 25 year olds +.  I, as a Senior, understand the changes in driving habits of older people.  That doesn't make us 'bad' drivers.  It means YOU must design accordingly.  Those big screens with a wealth of information is as bad as texting and driving.  Both are deadly.  I'll repeat a few suggestions.  Level the car making it easier to see out the rear window.  Do you know how hard it is to see a tailgating 'mini' car with your current designs?  I know it's probably impossible to make the headrests transparent but it would be great if you could.  The current headrests really do block vision.  I don't need all the automaticity that's here.  If I want a warmer seat, I'll put on long johns before I get into the car that I'll have to warm up for a couple minutes and that's ok.  Really.  I'm driving my Chevy Tracker that was bought in July of 2000.  It has a little over 90 thousand miles on it.  Aside from the rust on the rocker panels, it's in great shape.  Onward and upward, please........................................marge

I hope I don't have to go out today.

I can't understand how big chain stores can afford to be so generous on this 'Black Friday' weekend.  Is this just another 'marketing gimmick'?  Is it out of the kindness of their hearts or are they making such huge profits the rest of the time they can afford to sell cheaper a couple days out of the year?  There are lines and lines of people out to buy 'large ticket' items extending almost around the buildings.  What about those truly in need?  All the charity requests tell us they are out there, except on Thanksgiving weekend.  I just don't get it..................................marge

Spring cleaning

I confess. I came from a well to do family.  Once we had four dishwashers.  Not too many for a family of six.  Unfortunately, one by one, they moved away.  I'm now considering thoughts of spring cleaning.  Not for 2016 mind you, 20 15.  I decided several (actually more) years ago I was allergic to dust, not just on table tops but also floors.  This leaves me in a conundrum.  I hate to part with money unless its for something fun.  Paying to get dust removed isn't fun.  If I felt better afterward, I might consider it but past experience tells me any mood elevation is short lived.  The dust keeps returning.  What to do, what to do.....................................marge

A dead child. Again

Is any one person or thing to blame?  People do keep guns in their house, perhaps more now than ever before.  Parents, good ones, assume their children will listen to them and follow the rules of not touching or experimenting  with them.  But then, we parents also forget. Our children sometimes also momentarily throw the rules aside.  Their curiosity is much stronger than their reasoning or ability to handle any weapon.   We  know that but as time passes, we grow older and we forget about our own childhood misadventures.  A local weather caster blinded himself in one eye by a moment of not thinking when lighting fireworks.  So accidents can and do happen at any age.  As adults though, we must remember, for our and our children's sake.  Parents, not only put the guns away, but lock them up and keep the key with you.  Let the burglars come.  We may get robbed or hurt but maybe, just maybe, a child won't be dead, yet again.  One is one too many and we've had more than our share in SE Michigan...................................marge

Stink? What's your definition?

Recently, in another town, an older, homeless man was removed From a McDonald's by the police.  I am unable to find out which of three departments it was.  The address is 200 Beck Rd. at Pontiac Trail.  I, rightly or wrongly assume it was at the request of the manager.  That would certainly save face for the manager wouldn't it?  I've heard it was because the man didn't have on the cleanest clothes or smell that nice.  Perhaps either or both?  He bought and ate lunch with other noon regulars.  Have you ever been in any store where the men smell like several bottles of cologne accidentally spilled on them?  I have.  Too many times.  They take your breath away and not in a nice way.  Need I say which I prefer would be removed by the police, the slightly  'unclean' one or the ones leaving me gasping for fresh air?  The gentleman sat under the nearby Kroger overhang as it was raining.  I was told he was crying. It is another day and he is still there.  I have called the Novi and Walled Lake police and the Oakland County Sheriffs Dept. None were able to help me.  What a wonderful, kind world we live in..................................marge

Smoke and Mirrors

How do these companies promising beauty galore get away with it?  I'm not a camera genius but come on people.  Get real.  Can you not see the ever so slight camera angle change?  Move in a little, back off some with the camera.  And of course, the lighting.  The darker the image, the uglier the face (and neck) appear.  Increasing the lighting in itself removes many 'wrinkles'.  The  best perhaps is the pulling in of the chin.  That really gives one a 'turkey neck'.  Alternately, gently jutting the chin out, raising the head slightly, with  more lighting cures many visible ills.  Ah perfect.  Now go buy that 'wonderful', probably expensive product...................................marge

Birmingham 'Citizens for Responsible Government'

I received an anonymous political letter this week from a group who refer to themselves as 'Citizens for Responsible Government'.  We who wanted the Bond issue for our Public Library are now,  by this group, being referred to as the 'Gang'.  And, some  candidates are now also being accused of attempting to 'sweep away any remaining barriers to unrestrained commercial development.'  Yes.  Birmingham is unique and its the openly named residents who want to make it even better.  Your statements seem to be confusing at best.  Could or would you kindly tell us who you are and what your agenda is?  We don't hide.  Why are you?  Sincerely, just one of the 'gang'.............................marge

Birmingham Library Extravaganza

I have the greatest respect for The Birmingham Baldwin Library, its Director, Associate Director, The Library Board Members and those paid and volunteer workers.  I do however, have a problem with the new and higher cost to attend the Extravaganza this November.  Many younger and older families from Birmingham and nearby towns use this facility.  It is a lifeline for them.  Contrary to popular belief, not everyone can 'pop' $75 or $150 to attend.  The library did well at $50.  Why not keep the ticket price there?  We can't show off our wonderful library if anyone is kept away because of the cost.  To those who upped it, please reconsider.................................marge

Detroit Lions/Denver Broncos

I always assumed 'amateur sporting events' and 'pro sporting events' meant the same quality of sportsmanship play.  I'm now seriously having my doubts.  I watched the Detroit/Denver game last night, at least most of it.  One Detroit play lowered his head and slammed into the helmet of an opposing player.  That player had to go off of the field to see if he had gotten a concussion.  Accident?  Didn't appear so.  More good sportsmanship and other teams also do the following.  I watched a Lion continually rotate and raise his arms to get the home spectators to make lots of noise so the visiting team couldn't hear their quarterback's calls.  Apparently that Lion didn't think his team  could get ahead by just 'good' playing.  Must there always be what appears to be 'dirty tricks' in an attempt to come out ahead?  Shame on those players and spectators who must behave in this manner.  Come on Head Coach.  If you remain silent is this your way of giving approval?............................marge

Detroit Tigers. Don't do it!

Don't trade or fire a potentially great baseball manager.  The Tiger higher ups, it seems to me, made a lot of 'bad' trades the past few years.  Don't blame Ausmus.  A catcher has a better view of the whole game than anyone else.  He is slowly but surely building a 'solid' team and that can't be done overnight.............................marge

Think it over carefully

Is this what everyone wants?  No response to any emergency call?  Not a soul there for aid of any kind?  Take away the 911 number?  What would that leave us, a neighbor not home, no place to call, no hope for help of any kind?  Nothing is ever perfect, but knowing that there is always a number to call and trained people who love their jobs of helping others gives me the greatest of comfort.  Let us respect and protect those who serve us.  If not for them, what a sad world this would be and it's already sad enough..........................marge

Unexpected silent killer

People are murdered every day, planned or unplanned.  Regardless, the perpetrators  most likely will spend many years incarcerated.  We can and should blame it on handy weapons, but we mustn't leave out the basic cause, unexpected, uncontrolled fits of totally blind anger.  Their thinking and control processes suddenly break, becoming non existent.  This isn't something new but maybe a new approach to some sort of early symptom recognition needs everyone's full attention.  If this lack of control starts early in a child's life, let's start treatment then, not later.  No more excuses like, "Oh its just his or her personality, or "they'll outgrow it".  Apparently they aren't able.  We have to make this more obvious to everyone.  Our lives may depend upon it and when we least expect it.  The time to act is now.  Tomorrow may be too late....................................marge

I still don't understand your reasoning.   Its OK for ANYONE to walk around with a loaded weapon and shoot at their will, why?  Two young persons, not out to harm anyone but just to do their jobs, are dead and another non news worker seriously wounded because of this cowardly self centered excuse for a human being.   If it was a matter of honor and principle with the shooter, he/she wouldn't run and hide but apparently did.  Are you NRA putting notches of pride in your office headquarters?...................................marge

My pleasurable, painless music

Most of you may not understand my tastes but you older ones will.  Right now I'm listening to Susan Boyle.  She falls into the Kate Smith, Dinah Shore category.  I'm sure I'm forgetting many.  As for the men, there's Andy Williams, Perry Como and again, many others.  I hear words, melody and soothing thoughts from their voices.  Volume isn't all that important.  Their delivery is.  So much of it brings happiness, joy and calmness.   Or simply, comfort and pleasure.  And I'm just adding Whitney Houston!...........................marge

What do or will they look like?

This is probably old news to many but I got to see it first hand.  An out of state family came to visit for the week.  If you're interested, I can readily describe the tops of their heads.  That's mostly what I saw while they were here, except of course when at a restaurant.  They are apparently, well on their way to the 'Chin on Chest Syndrome'.  Whether sitting upright or reclining in the Lazy Boy, they were in the syndrome position.  Again, for you who might not know, this position is a down the road, many years, causing upper back and neck deformity.  It is preventable but, you must have the courage, strength and long term determination to perform what is necessary to save them.  You must, not once, but many times, take away those small, rectangular things, I think they're called 'tablets'.  They have other names, but no matter.  You must not only take them away but hide them, at least occasionally.   This is where cleverness comes in, especially if teenagers are in possession of these little 'boxes'.  They can out think you in a second.  There is one other solution.  This may be harder.  Explaining (excuse me while I laugh) why this 'chin on chest in not healthy) and may need to be repeated many times.  Putting pictures of 'older' arthritic people on the refrigerator may help, or not, but no harm in trying.  When all else fails, but only occasionally, relax in your favorite chair and have a glass of weak wine....................................marge

No guarantees

I've checked the bathroom, the garden watering area, putting trash at the front curb and curling up in my favorite chair to quietly watch a favorite TV show, for hidden cameras.  This isn't enough.  I bought a special small leather bound note pad as a final resort.  I am keeping track of when I go to the above mentioned places.  The next step is to check my recording accuracy.  If these solutions don't work, I shall do what I hoped I wouldn't have to, call my relatives and friends and point blank ask them how they know.  Know what?  When I'm in or at these places, and then choose to call me at these precise moments.  Their timing is impeccable, or, maybe there's some latest detecting device of which I haven't heard.  Hmmm..........................marge

Another child shot to death

How many children's deaths must we tolerate before something is done?  If no one wants to blame the child who pulled the trigger, then there's another someone to blame, the so called 'adult' father who not only owned the gun but showed it to the 11 years old shooter.  People should not only be lawfully checked for mental illness before being allow to make such purchases but also be tested for 'parental stupidity'..............................marge

Who are the Detroit Tigers?

I'm trying my best to put names to all the Tiger players but its not being made easy.  The only three I can definitely name are Miguel Cabrera, Albuquerque and Avila.  The last two by 1. The ramrod posture and 2.  The long weekend growth of beard from someone who has been up north in the woods with no modern facilities.  Oh yes.  One more, Price.  He greatly resembles a regular mailman named 'Tod' in Birmingham, Mi.  It boils down to camera angles and where their names are on their uniforms.  They are not on their chest or arm sleeves where the camera would pick them up.  No.  They're on their backs which hardly get a decent view.  The only other player I can readily name is Jerry Priddy.  The way he held the bat high in the air, was unmistakable.  Couldn't miss him.  For those of you who had to look him up, I'm sure I noticed him when I was an infant sitting on my father's lap...............................marge

Deceptive? I sure think so.

I love watching and analyzing television and internet picture commercials.  They are done so cleverly.  Most recent is the two attractive women talking about teeth whitening products.  They are similar in looks and both nice but...take a closer look at the hair of the one on the left (sinestra lol).  Her hair is a bit straggly and stringy look.  Not so much as to make a big difference but just enough to make her a wee bit less attractive, never mind the teeth at this point.  She is of course the one that didn't use the 'right' product.  Then we go to assorted 'still' pictures.   They are the ones that advertise 'creams' or procedures to melt away the years.  On the 'not so good' side we have less lighting, head slightly downward and ever so less of a smile.  All things to indicate we need help.  Now switch to 'chin up', more light (less wrinkles showing) and an ever so slight upward turn of the corners of the mouth.  I don't think this is by accident, just excellent camera work.  My my...................................marge

Hitting the target well, or not.

Being able to hit a target with proficiency at a shooting range, does not make you a good gun owner.  I think far from it.  Children could do it, perhaps better than many adults.  Does that mean these juvenile sharp shooters should have a gun carrying permit?  Not on your life, or mine.  People don't seem to understand the mental training and conditioning that should go hand in hand with gun ownership, not just how good you are at pulling a trigger.  Its not a class that should be taken once in which you pass with flying colors.  These should be ongoing classes over a great period of time with occasional required refresher courses.  Thank heavens surgeons and electricians don't stop trying to improve after one job done to perfection.  We'd be in a lot of trouble.  Real experts do and redo to improve their skills, physical and mental.  So should gun owners..........................  marge

Too smart is my problem

I used to feel inferior for not being able to get my computer to do what I want, but not any more.  I figured out where my thinking has gone awry.  I, for a long time, have wanted to scan 'anything' and put it into its own file.  I've yelled, pounded the table and even cussed at my 'printer, scanner, copier' machine.  It hasn't done any good.  The same to my computer.  I've even tried (forgive me) reading instructions.  That, needless to say, was a big waste of time.  Suddenly, while pondering, total understanding came to me.  Not necessarily the answer, no, far from it.  Just understanding.  I'm way way too smart.  Its not my fault.  That's just the way it is.  I can't think like five-10 years olds.  They can do this stuff, with great ease I might add.  Now all I have to do, is find a friend with a grade schooler to come over and help.  I'm willing to pay, big time.........................marge

My confession

I want everyone to know why I hate mornings.  It starts the night before.  I'm supposed to give my 90 + wonderful neighbor a ride to the beauty shop in the morning.  I take my nighttime meds and go to bed.  Not too early, not to late.  Eventually I fall asleep, having asked two people to call me in the a.m. to make sure I'm up and ready to go.  The only problem.  I wake up every two hours to check the clock.  I so rarely use the alarm clock I worry it won't work.  It did.  Although tired from my restless night, I am up and ready.  I go to my neighbor's house.  Nobody answers.  I'm starting to get concerned.  The only phone number I have is to California and its three hours earlier there.  With a city worker's help, she comes to the door.  I am grateful to him.  She informs me she left a message on my answering machine, yesterday I presume, that she cancelled  her hair appointment.  Somewhere out there in telephone land, someone got the message, but not I. Loneliness

Even if surrounded by people on a daily basis, loneliness can't always be avoided.  It isn't a question about the number of people in the room, its all about how one feels about oneself.  Lonely people can be mean, selfish, stingy and seemingly undeserving of any affection.  They could well bring it upon themselves, but not by a conscious choice.  They just don't know how to make it different.  A pet might help, but they require attention, something an older person can't always give.  And if the older person dies, where would the pet go?  Older people do think of that.  Conversely, if the pet dies and the owner is over 80, a new pet isn't a reasonable choice.  Seems like a lose lose situation.  Somewhere out there, there is an answer but would we use it if we found it?  Doesn't seem so, does it?  At least so far..............................marge

Three things at this moment are driving me up the proverbial wall.  There are more but my brain has a limit of three and then I have to write them down so as not to forget.  Dead body.  perhaps not  when referring to a'body' of water, but to a person, you don't need to say they are dead.  I would conclude that, really, especially if it's a 'decomposed'  one.  Dead animals are called 'carcasses', not 'dead carcasses'.  So quit saying 'dead body'.  Human remains (or just plain 'body') will be quite sufficient.  2ndly, I've criticized those who say 'I misspoke'  I confess to doing it myself.  I wasn't lying, It's just that sometimes it takes the passage of time for the real memory to kick in at which time I will correct my mistakes and I have.  Lastly, it's that old 'went missing' again.  Who started that?  Was it Nancy Grace?  I didn't 'went to the store and then 'went missing' because I didn't come home when expected.  I just disappeared for a longer time than usual.  Disappeared is such a nice word.  What idiot replaced it with the horrible sounding 'went missing'?!  Surely that can't be correct english?  Please tell me it isn't....................................marge

Our Governor. Where is his heart?

Governor Snyder.  How can you deny children a chance to live in a home, a forever home and be loved.  Do you have any idea what loneliness does to a child?  Do you not even have a hint what a loving home would do for these kids or just as important, what not having one would do to them?  Think about that.  That is equally important if not more so.  They are our future and you choose to allow them not to have a chance at that.  Open your heart and mind.  Their lives may well depend upon it.........................................marge

At 14. Arguing with a police officer?

Why would the young lady make the almost instant decision to argue with a police officer, especially at age 14?  These young people are being prompted or conditioned ahead of time to react without reason in case they are ever approached by law enforcement.  These officers didn't show up just to see how many they could shoot, they came because they were called.  Come on parents and Community leaders, lets put things into perspective.  Let reason prevail.................................marge

7 p.m. Is it safe yet?

Can I come out safely?  Are the 'morning people' gone yet?  Lordy I hope so.  I had to turn off the tv again this morning.  Those cheerful, bubbly, smiling ear to ear people were at it again on channel 2.  I haven't figured out what causes their behavior yet but I'm working on it.  Maybe they go to bed at 3 p.m. and get up at 3 a.m. to start their day.  I just know something isn't right.  MY day starts at 7.....  p.m., that is.  That is when I start 'smiling'and if someone calls, happily say "good evening" and how are you this fine night!  I don't have to put on fancy or 'work' duds.  I'm ready to ask you in just as I am, but with real warmth and a smile.  Make up at this hour isn't a factor.  In fact, I think the last time I wore any was maybe, 15 years ago, more or less.  Its a dark and cheery evening.  Lets go folks!  Onward and Upward!........................marge

Sexual assault victims

Don't blame little children if they are molested by someone they have no reason not to trust.  And don't think they forget, even if decades go by.  They don't.  They didn't know what it was, or why it was happening to them.  They just know they didn't like it or want it.  Most importantly, they didn't know how to say "no" or "stop".  It doesn't occur to them to tell a parent or guardian.  How do you 'tell' what you don't understand, even as it is happening?  Too much is expected from little ones.  Too much too much.  It becomes a dark dark secret carried in the heart most likely forever.  Forgiveness does comes but the burden of carrying these memories takes an immeasurable unconscious toll.  I don't pretend to have an answer for the 'Nineteen and counting family' but please, put the victims, all of them, first.  No excuses..............................marge

phooey

The sun is shining, it's almost warm outside, so, why am I sad?   I'll tell you why.  It's only 9:40 a.m.  No one up at this hour falls into the 'human' category.  It is SO not right to be up, out and about.  You early risers won't understand the anguish of us night owls and anguish it is.  There's little more upsetting than being out of bed early and worse, having people try to talk to you.  It just doesn't work.  Go away.  Come back in 12 hours.  I can almost promise I will welcome you with open arms...................marge

Filibustering

Ever since Jimmie Stewart made the well know movie Mr. Smith goes to Washington, some of our legislators think its to their benefit to use this method to get what they want.  Rand Paul, the latest.  What did he prove?  He proved he likes to be in the limelight and he's desperate to allow honest votes not to be cast.  If his thinking warrants a majority vote, then it will happen.  He doesn't need to waste everyone's time and our money.  Let's not play games with our Country and people..............................marge

Beautiful, attractive and more.

Many don't realize the burden of ageless beauty, attractiveness, sensuality and irresistibility.  I'm sure many 'stars' 'celebrities' past and present come to mind.  The attention, fawning and gifts that come one's way are endless, not to mention who, really, are genuine friends?  Think  twice before you wish these upon anyone.  It is a lonely, sad burden to have to carry for so many years.  Oh damn.  My alarm clock just went off.  No no.  Do I have to look in the mirror while I brush my teeth?  I'll start with one eye.  Back to me.  I'm the one with the 'wonderful' personality........................marge

well why not..

I've decided to 'redo' my life.  This doesn't of course include the offspring.  Leave well enough alone.  I'm removing any and all 'mistakes' I've unintentionally made over the past half century.  I'm thinking it won't be an 'overnight' endeavor but I'll do my best.  Where to start may be a problem and that  has to do with memory.  I've just had too much to remember.  Not all of it to my liking.  I must say however, when memory fails, there are always 'friends' who will keep me informed whether I want them to or not.  Oh my goodness, therein lies the solution!  Starting today, I'm going out and getting all new friends.  I'll keep some of the 'good' ones of course and there are a few.  As for the rest, adios amigos.  Good morning new world!...........................marge

Fake colors

I just watched a breakfast commercial.  All three ladies had different color hair.  I don't mind brunette.  I don't mind blonde.  Natural white I love.  I do mind the oh so unnatural reds, dark rusts and pale pinkish sorta orange colors.  Ladies, you're starting to look too much alike!  I'll bet some of you wouldn't recognize your natural color if so confronted!  I love my 'silvery gray' natural color.  I confess.  I did have to get it artificially waved.  You with natural waves wouldn't understand.  Just pretend for a moment that your hair looked like a whisk broom.  That dear friends, would be me, but alas, on the thinning side, waves however, hide many sins.....................marge

Perfect pre-Mother's Day day

(I'm saving the best for last).  One of my children (of which three out of Four are speaking to me) came over and spent the day with  me.  We had a grand time.  She wore the 'Mom loves me best' T shirt I had given to her after she searched frantically through her drawers to find it.  We wandered the flea market (It really is fun!) and I had a nice Asian lunch with enough for another meal.  The best part though, is when an acquaintance of my daughter asked if we were sisters.  The shock on my daughter's face made the lady quickly correct to 'Is this your mother?'  Yes.  There is payback.  :-).................................marge

Rioting by young people in Baltimore.

Whatever one wants to call the behavior of the black youth in Baltimore, it is not, in any way acceptable.  Why should it be excusable?  Their behavior is beyond any excuse anyone can conjure up.  Throwing bricks at people, smashing and burning cars, breaking into stores like CVS, and worst of all, doing it under the guise of anti-racism.  If you want to be listened to, try talking, not behaving like rabid animals. And that is exactly how you are behaving.  You are not for justice and equality, you apparently just want much needed attention at any cost including or especially being seen all over the world on camera. Never mind you look like running, cowardly idiots.  Does it make you feel like a really BIG person?  Think again.  You were never so wrong.  If you weren't so viciously hurting and damaging other people and things, I could almost, I said, almost, feeling sorry for you.  Right now I hold you in the highest contempt and you have earned it.....................marge

What are you doing God?

As I poured my first cup of coffee this morning while gazing out my kitchen window, my heart dropped.  Snow.  I blinked, just to make sure.  Yep, not a lot but real snow.  This is just wrong.  Has God turned into a prankster?  It's Spring and it's not funny God!  Yesterday I was admiring the so tall they were even falling over daffodils at my side door. And, if I'd raked last fall's large leaves out of my yard, I'd see the tiny blue flowers fighting their way up to see the sun's rays.  I enjoy a good joke now and then but this is ridiculous.  I won't even mention the leafless, blossoming Magnolia bush.  You have some explaining to do God, I'm waiting..........................marge

Senator Ted Cruz running for President

I don't know this man well but the little I do, scares me.  He believes in the Constitution of the United States and individual rights.  No no.  That is not what he stands for.  His ideas of individual freedoms are not the same as mine.  His are right.  Mine are wrong.  He doesn't believe in live and let live.  He doesn't believe in letting each of us, as long as we cause no harm to anyone else, be.  It's his way or the highway.  Gay couples, gay parents do me no harm.  Their love of each other and any children they may have, is a good thing.  I honestly don't know too many, but the  ones I do, seem extra special and nice, to me.  I can't say that about all the 'straight' people I know.  I see in this man narrow mindedness, inflexible thinking and absolutely no room for anything else.  He actually really does scare me.  He won't give freedoms, he'll be taking them away from each and every one of us.  If I do no harm to anyone else, then let me and others who think like, or not like I, be.  Don't put your rules on the rest of your fellow man.  Freedom is choice.  That's what our Constitution says.  So be it..................................marge

Rage. An epidemic

Rage, from youngsters to seniors is rampant.  Uncontrolled temper tantrums are destroying not only the victims but the perpetrators.  An adult going to prison for sucker punching and killing a volunteer ref because he didn't like the call.  A teenager giving up all scholarships because he, in a split second, decided it was ok to body slam a high school security guard.  Now, a young college football player has been suspended from the sport for pointing a gun at a driver who honked at him for driving recklessly in traffic.  (This young man had a gun why?)  Parents, schools, anyone, why hasn't this critical problem been addressed or even seen coming?  Do we all just back away when we see anger?  I know I tend to.  Perhaps its time we stopped.  We don't know what to do with these individuals and so it seems, we just turn the other way.  Not our problem we tell ourselves.  But it is.  It's all our problem.  Turning away won't work.  Someone please, tell us what to do........................................marge

Legalizing recreational marijuana

A bill may be in the offering to legalize recreational marijuana by one of our Michigan state legislators.  He says it will bring in big revenue.  What he neglects to say, is at how much cost?  Explain this 'big revenue' to all those who have had their cars totalled and loved one killed by drivers 'under the influence'.  Using marijuana will affect one's driving ability, as does alcohol.  Don't kid yourself.  I believe the 'cost' far outweighs any revenue.  We don't need to legalize another 'drug and drive'....................marge

It was the worst of times, the best of times.

I had an 11:30 a.m. dentist appointment today.  That in itself sets me off for the previous 24 hours.  I don't sleep well the night before and I'm near a basket case if I have to go anywhere before at least noon.  Starting disaster part #1.  They called and changed my appt. to 10:15 a.m.  That almost pushed me over the edge but on my way there, my muffler fell down, disaster # 2.  I've had things 'fall down' on my car before and its no fun.  Huge rattling and scraping on the cement, well, you know.  I went into the  dentist's office where wonderful people are including John who's in charge of the creative tooth lab.  He took a coat hanger outside with him and laid on some cardboard.  He proceeded to tie the muffler up til I could get to a repair place.  I headed to 13 mile and Greenfield Rds. To Ernie's muffler shop after my dentist appt.  Those are also 'wonderful' people, from the desk ladies to the repairers.  My car was fixed in no time and cost $99!  So yes, I am surviving.  Who said this 'senior' s--t was easy?  Bull!  Then I remember.  Life could be so much worse. Be grateful..............................marge

Sick humor. Its not all that bad...

Those of us lucky enough to understand it, are ahead of the game.  While in a local store with one of my daughters, an out of state daughter called on her cell phone to this daughter next to me.  I of course yelled, "how's my favorite daughter?" to the out of state one.  The one next to me replied, "I told you mother, I'm just fine".  Then there's the T shirts I sent to them all at Christmas.  Each reading, 'Mom loves me best'!  so far I haven't seen a picture of any wearing said T shirt.  I'm SO disappointed..........................marge

Innocence of Children

Many many years ago, My then four year old looked up at a lady and asked, "are you a big fat lady?"  Another once laid on the cement at Wrigley's grocery store with her thumb in her mouth, causing an elderly lady to look at me with a scowl and give a few clucks of the tongue.  The last one I remember was my not quite as young one doing a good deed.  She set fire to a nest of ants she found in the attic.  (I had run to the corner grocery to quickly pick up something).  BUT... she took the nest (in a shoebox) outside to burn it.  Ya just don't know.....................marge

New automobiles

The radio said 65 % of adults are afraid of buying a new car.  I'm one of them.  All the electronic gizmos on the dashboard are enough to scare anyone over 60+.  My current car has a key to unlock the doors and turn on the ignition.  At this point in my life, that's all I need.  I don't need to know how cold or hot it is outside my car.  That's not why I got into the car.  I (although it might be nice) could survive without one of the 'GPS's.  I know where my grocery store is and how to get there on my own.  I can read the needle that tell me I need to get gas and I know in this cold weather, to keep the tank fuller and why.  I look at the tires as I prepare to drive.  If one were 'flat', I'd spot it right away.  Truly.   I know this may shock some, but I remember putting my arm out of the window to signal I was going to turn.  Before power steering, after a turn, one could let go of the wheel and whee! it would 'unturn' itself.  As for safety features, I'd be so busy trying to read the dashboard my eyes wouldn't be on the road.  That is NOT a safety feature!  Simpler has to be better.  Really.................................marge

Loneliness

I love talking to 'strangers'.   Especially if they like to talk back.  You just have to hope the next person you say hi to is friendly.  Occasionally one isn't.  That's embarrassing.  Oops!  It seems people don't have time to drop in or call.  It's a busy world out there.  And at times, a lonely one.  I've just been reminded about  an older gentleman who possibly in the same clothes, day after day, comes  into the McDonalds near Pontiac Trail and Beck Rds.  He's known to many 'regulars' and chats with them.  The Managers don't seem to mind their 'regulars', including him, who hang out.  It's a warm gathering place in more ways than one.  This gentleman seems to bring out the best in the other 'regulars'.  He perhaps is just a little more needy but that's ok.  Good is happening there...........................marge

How important is truth?

Lying I assume can be for good or not so good.  I recently told a 'white lie'.  Within  a short time, the guilt was so overwhelming  I quickly corrected it as best I could.  Never again.  Its not worth the anguish!  To my purpose of this Blog.  Several years ago, Hillary Clinton spoke of running off of the  tarmac while ducking bullets.  When found to be not true, her reply was, "I misspoke".  Really?  That's it?  Now it seems, Brian Williams has done the same thing.  He has tried to explain and apologize for his lie.  Both have left me deeply disappointed in their trust and integrity.  Where do we go from here?  Image is everything.  Image is nothing..........................marge

U.S. and Canada border.

I see where our local weather stations in Michigan do include (on a small level), weather conditions in Ontario, Canada.  Beyond Ontario, I have grave doubts.  According to the map of Maine, blizzards stop at its northern border.  The weather becomes all clear.  This however, is not the case, having heard from my New Brunswick (Canada) cousins.  That darned blizzard snuck right across the border and they got 30 cms. Right and wrong way to use it

Not all of us have enjoyed 'self confidence'.  It can be plentiful  or sadly rare.  Mine comes with how I use my hands to fix, improve or beautify different things.  That I believe, is where my brains are.  Now give a calculator to me and ask me to add 12 and 14 and I'd be in trouble.  But let's get to the real problem, that of those who perhaps unwittingly flaunt their areas of self confidence.  They seem to be experts just about anytime they open their mouths.  I probably could learn something from them (or not) but it does get boring listening.  Sadly, I believe they have no idea how they sound or even act.  Its just them being them.  I on the other hand (or both) :), can with great self confidence frequently be heard to say "I don't know" with no qualms or feelings of shame.  But when I don't have to say, "I don't know", oh what a high!  It does happen.  I remember just last month..............................marge

The British are coming the British are coming!

I don't think our allies across the Pond are being insidious but a little doubt has been creeping in.    It started, to my observation, with all our 'infomercials'.  Am I the only one who's noticed the rising number of, shall we say, 'working class' British accents?  Next before I knew it, they'd  captured hosting late night shows.  Now and perhaps, a higher speaking class, is covering World News.  And more than one station!  Are we really prepared for this?  I think they're trying to make us believe that Britishness speaking people are more accurate?  Can that be?  As an aside, I must admit I do put a little more credence in the Canadian broadcasters to whom I listen.  ( I know, they are not British but they run a close second.)  They seem much more serious to me.  Who would doubt, among others, Peter Mansbridge of the Canadian 'National News'?  Not I.
